BioscalinAIT: AI-Powered Scalp Analysis
Scenario
Giuliani, a leading pharmaceutical company in the trichology sector, wanted to offer its network of partner pharmacies an innovative tool to strengthen consultations with end customers. The need was to create a scalp and hair health analysis service that was scientific, accessible, and capable of guiding the pharmacist towards the most suitable products, consolidating trust in its Bioscalin brand. To realise this vision, Giuliani turned to Deix to develop a cutting-edge digital platform.
The challenge
The project presented three main areas of difficulty. First, the analysis of complex images: scalp photos acquired via micro-cameras are extremely variable in terms of lighting, skin type, and hair. The challenge was to develop effective Computer Vision algorithms without having a large archive of labelled data, making traditional supervised approaches inapplicable. Second, scalability and robustness: the solution had to be a robust, secure, and scalable web application, capable of reliably and efficiently serving thousands of external users (the pharmacies) while impeccably managing customer data and informed consent modules to fully comply with GDPR regulations.
The solution
The heart of the solution lies in the Computer Vision algorithmic core. To overcome the limitation of scarce labelled data, we developed bespoke unsupervised algorithms capable of performing a precise reconstruction of key indicators — such as hair miniaturisation and cutaneous alterations — directly from the acquired images. The developed algorithms are thus able to provide both diagnostic support indications, on possible associated pathologies, and therapeutic suggestions on the recommended treatment.
Unsupervised Computer Vision
Bespoke unsupervised algorithms reconstruct key indicators such as hair miniaturisation and skin alterations directly from images, overcoming the lack of labelled training data.
Scalable Cloud Architecture
The cloud infrastructure was designed to guarantee performance, reliability, and scalability, serving thousands of pharmacies with consistent quality of service.
GDPR Compliance & Security
The platform integrates multi-level authentication, a GDPR compliance management module, and an automatic notification system via email and SMS.
Results achieved
The collaboration with Giuliani led to the creation of a strategic tool that generated value on multiple levels: Giuliani was able to offer pharmacies a distinctive, high-scientific-value service, improving customer experience and reinforcing its image as an innovative leader in the sector; the platform not only analyses but provides a targeted product recommendation, transforming consultations into an informed and relevant sales opportunity; and the Computer Vision challenge with limited data was successfully overcome, demonstrating Deix's ability to create customised solutions even in complex conditions.
Future developments
The approach — web platform combined with unsupervised image analysis — is perfectly replicable in other cosmetic or dermatological contexts, such as the analysis of skin, nails, or other cutaneous conditions.
